Chevrolet has announced that its 2014 Spark EV will be priced from $27,495 including an $810 destination fee.
The American automaker also announced that the Spark EV 1LT will have a low mileage lease for as low as $199 a month for 36 months with $999 due at signing, helping make it one of the most affordable electric vehicles available on the market. As for those that want to purchase it, keep in mind the retail price of $27,495 doesn’t include the federal tax credit which can range from $0 to $7,500 – potentially making the Spark EV as cheap as $19,995.
California Spark EV owners can also qualify for other incentives ranging from $0 to $2,500 helping bring the price to as low as $17,495. California owners will also be eligible for the High-Occupancy Vehicle, or carpool lane, access decal.
The 2014 Spark EV will be available at select dealerships in California and Oregon starting mid-June 2013. It features a combined city/highway EPA-estimated range of 82 miles when fully charged and an EPA-estimated combined city/highway 119 MPGe fuel economy equivalent.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released official fuel consumption and range ratings for the Chevrolet Spark EV today.
According to the EPA Chevrolet’s little electric car is capable of a maximum 82-mile driving range and returns 119 MPGe in combined city and highway driving.
“We’re poised to deliver to the market an EV that’s not just efficient, but also thrilling to drive thanks to the 400 lb-ft torque output of its electric motor,” said Pam Fletcher, GM executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles.
Spark EVs get their power from a 21 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that puts out 130 hp and is covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile limited warranty.
Using DC fast charging, the Spark EV can regain up to 80 percent of its capacity in approximately 20 minutes, while using a dedicated 240V outlet, charging will take “less than seven hours.”
The Spark EV doesn’t quite beat the competition however, as Fiat recently unveiled the 500e, which tops the Spark EV with 87 miles of range, and a free gas-powered rental car if the owners want to take a long trip.
The Spark EV will be offered for sale this summer in California and Oregon.
Chevrolet has a big change in store for its little Spark sub-compact: the four-speed automatic will disappear to be replaced by a CVT.
A General Motors representative has yet to confirm that the change will take place, but if documents on enthusiast forum GM Inside News prove to be true, the sub-compact four-door hatch will likely offer improved fuel economy, perhaps in line with the 38 highway mpg quoted with the five-speed manual that will also remain in the lineup.
Currently, the automatic Spark delivers an EPA estimated 32 mpg combined. GM uses a 1.25-liter dual-overhead cam four cylinder engine with 84 hp. Unlike other sub-compacts it competes with, the Spark offers separate doors for the rear-seat passengers.
