2013 Chevrolet Spark to Drop CD Player

Targeted towards today’s youngsters, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark will do what no other Chevrolet model has done since the 1990s: Lose its CD player.

As more and more drivers turn to their iPods and smartphones to provide in-car entertainment, Chevrolet is one of the first automakers to make the move of losing the CD player in one of its car models entirely. What the Spark will come with however is the MyLink infotainment system that features a seven-inch touchscreen and Pandora Internet streaming music as standard on the 1LT and 2LT models. As for the base model LS, there won’t be a MyLink – just a basic AM/FM radio with a plug for a portable music player – presumably an auxiliary.

But just to show how firm the automaker is with its stance, no CD player will be available as an option at all. According to Strategic Analytics, a global market research and consulting firm, approximately 300,000 vehicles sold this year will come without a CD player.

“It’s more of a logical approach for this type of vehicle,” Afaf Farah, a Chevrolet spokeswoman, said of the Spark in a telephone interview. “Today’s younger customer is doing everything with their mobile devices, so this is a way to have all their apps and music in the vehicle.”

It's about time. Nearly everyone has a smartphone these days that already holds a ton of music that can be synced to the car, then there's satellite radio. CD's have become more of a nuisance over the years.
