Scheduled to make its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, Chevrolet gave the media a sneak preview of its Spark EV at its Electrification Experience event in San Francisco, California.

Hoping to set a new benchmark for urban electric vehicles, the new Spark EV will be heading to California dealer showrooms next summer powered by a permanent magnet motor that produces at least 130 hp and instantaneous torque of about 400 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, the American automaker didn’t actually confirm final performance figures, but did state that the Spark EV will hit 0-60 mph in less than eight seconds.

Along with the Spark EV, GM will introduce the industry-first SAE combo charger that will allow DC Fast Charging of up to 80 percent of the Spark EV’s battery capacity in approximately 20 minutes. Another unfortunate tidbit on the automaker’s preview is that it still hasn’t released final range figures for its Spark EV but promises that it’ll provide EV range among the best in the segment.

“Spark EV’s battery has undergone more than 200,000 hours of testing in our global battery systems labs,” said Larry Nitz, executive director of GM’s global electrification engineering team. “This testing paved the way to allow our customers to do multiple DC Fast Charges daily to help alleviate range anxiety and improve convenience.”

Undoubtedly we should have more information when the Spark EV makes its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
