2014 Chevrolet Spark EV Unveiled Ahead of LA Auto Show Debut
Ahead of its official debut at the 2012 LA Auto Show, Chevrolet has unveiled its Spark EV which will be priced under $25,000 with tax incentives.
Powered by an advanced electric motor and battery system, the Spark EV delivers 130 hp and an impressive 400 lb-ft of torque for instant acceleration. A more than 20-kWh lithium-ion battery “is expected to provide among the best EV range performance in its segment,” according to the American automaker. Just how great will be the range? That remains to be an unknown, hopefully Chevrolet announces official figures when the vehicle debuts at the LA Auto Show.
What we do know about the Spark EV however is that it’ll pack a pair of configurable, high-resolution, seven-inch color LCD screens with one of them displaying the vehicle’s critical vehicle functions including a confidence gauge that shows the expected driving range based on driving habits and other conditions. The compact EV will also come with Chevy’s MyLink radio as standard, while the optional SAE Combo DC Fast Charging capability enables owners to charge the Spark EV to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.
The American automaker confirmed that the Spark EV will launch in California, Oregon, Canada, and other global markets including South Korea. In California, the Spark EV will qualify for the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) decal. As for the battery, Chevy stated that it has undergone over 200,000 hours of testing and is warrantied for eight years or 100,000 miles.
“When you engineer a technology-filled, all-electric mini car that goes from zero-to-60 mph in less than eight seconds, customers won’t miss the gas,” said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. “The Volt and now the Spark EV show that Chevrolet not only knows EVs better than anyone else, we also know how to help customers get the most out of their EV experience.”
