GM has announced the introduction of the Spark microcar in Canada and the US in 2012, with a 100% electric version to follow a year later. Curious? We’ve got some details for you.

The Spark is 14 inches shorter than a Chevrolet Sonic, three feet longer than a smart fortwo and four inches longer than a Fiat 500.

A 1.2-litre, 83-hp, 4-cylinder mill hides under the hood, dispatching power to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. An optional autobox will also be available.

GM says the Spark will feature the most spacious cabin of its class, and the options list will include the MyLink infotainment system, Bluetooth, artificial leather, heated seats and alloy wheels.

An electric version for 2013

The American automaker also announced it would be launching its very first 100% electric model in 2013 in the shape of the Spark EV.

GM describes it as ideal for drivers living in urban areas, who have predictable driving habits or travel short distances.

The manufacturer will have more information for us next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show. We can, however, expect similarities with the versions of the Spark already available in Europe, Korea, Mexico, South America and Australia.
