General Motors is updating the software on certain 2013 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid vehicles to fix an anomaly that could shut down the electric motor while driving, GM spokeswoman Michelle Malcho tells us. A few Volt owners have reported the issue to the automaker, saying that the electric motor temporarily stopped working after using the delayed time and rate charge modes.

Chevrolet dealers will reflash the software, which should take less than an hour, to correct the issue on about 4000 Volts. GM is recommending that owners stop using the delayed charging function until the issue is resolved. After being off for about two to five minutes, the vehicle will again function properly. During the incidences, the Volt’s steering and braking systems still work, allowing owners to safely come to a stop, Malcho tells us.
For the 2013 model year, the Chevrolet Volt gets improved NVH characteristics when the car shifts between gas engine and battery power as well as boosted EPA ratings of 98 MPGe and 38 miles of EV range. Considering the offers some Chevrolet dealers are making on the Volt, we’re guessing potential PHEV buyers may just be willing to overlook this software issue.
