500,000 electric variant cars on the road by 2017 is a lofty goal, but General Motors feels assured they are going to be producing exactly what drivers want in fuel efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles for their driving pleasure. This is the news that came through from the General Motors Electrification Experience in San Francisco yesterday. What the American automaker means is that these models will have some form of electrification to help them power through the highways and byways. This includes small electric eAssist vehicles, to full on electric powered mobiles like the Chevy Spark EV.

To help General Motors kick off their goal to have 500,000 electric models out on the road, the 2012 sales year offered a great kick off. As of the end of October 19,309 Chevy Volt models hit the streets and the expectation for that vehicle alone by the end of the year is set to around 25,000. The expectation for this model as well as new productions such as the Cadillac EV you see in the image should skyrocket sales in big ways. The focus is going to be on plug-in models even more to help hit these high numbers.

“The plug-in offers a unique opportunity to change the way people commute,” Mary Barra, senior vice president of Global Product Development told media yesterday. “Plug-based solutions will play a significant role in our technology portfolio going forward.”

She added, “What started out as a technology proof point… has turned into a real-world starting point to push EV technology further and faster than we thought possible five years ago. The unique propulsion technology pioneered in the Volt – the same technology that will be featured in the Cadillac ELR – will be a core piece of our electrification strategy going forward.”

We will be looking forward to watching General Motors meet, and hopefully exceed their goals. In the meantime we will be keeping all eyes out for more news about that Cadillac EV. If it’s as sharp as this image hints at, it just might become Americans favorite new luxury class electric vehicle.
